About FDC

Our mission is to allow young people to continue their education, because in Kenya secondary and tertiary education is not free.  We currently have 61 young people on our programme aged between 15-24 years, both girls and boys.  We take approximately eight new students per academic year depending on our funds. The majority live in Dagoretti, a very low-income area  bordering  Karen, a suburb of Nairobi.

Each applicant must have achieved above  average in their Primary Education exam. In addition, the family must show that they are unable to afford further education.  We need funds to cover both school fees and basic term time expenses.

Mentoring is also a significant part of our programme, giving guidance with life skills and helping with family issues. Despite their parent(s) or guardian being needy, and many with little education themselves, the family should  be willing to contribute what little they can, thereby taking some ownership of their child’s education. It is not only the children who benefit. The family and wider community also benefit from the ripple effect.

After completing their secondary education it is expected that a beneficiary should undertake a minimum of three months’ voluntary service in the community.

FDC supported the children's families during the pandemic by providing food parcels.

Our social worker is based in the FDC rent-free office , where we interact with our students and hold meetings and seminars.

The office is provided by Mahali Pa Watoto nursery school (A place for Children) in Dagoretti.  It is our sister charity providing pre primary education for underprivileged children from the Dagoretti area.

Mahali Pa Watoto is funded through The Seedsowing Network, a UK based charity that also contributes directly to FDC, sponsoring many of our students. If you are a UK resident you can donate  to FDC through Seedsowing.co.uk (Registered Charity number 1095516) - your donation then becomes tax deductible. For more information see www.seedsowing.co.uk or contact  stevenp@seedsowing.co.uk

         New Chair for FDC

After more than 20 years as Chair, Katharine (otherwise known as Pop) Gunson, has retired from the role and been replaced by Louise Dickson. Louise has been part of the FDC committee for a number of years . Apart from previously being the Honorary Secretary, Louise has spent much time with the students and knows them well.
We are pleased to say that Pop remains on the committee. Her knowledge and advice are always valued.
